Requirements for Becoming a Foster Parent
There are a few requirements for becoming a foster parent that are the same in every state, and other requirements can vary from state to state. It is necessary for you to complete an application and supply references from family and non-family. The state requirements for becoming a foster parent in Texas are:
Must be at least 21 years of age, financially stable and responsible, and a mature adult.
Share information regarding their background and lifestyle.
Have no criminal history.
Have no history of abusing a child or another adult.
Agree to a home study which includes an inspection of all parts of the home and visits with all members of the household.
Attend free training to learn about abused and neglected children.
Must be a US citizen or legally living within the United States.
Although there is no set income, the prospective family needs to be able to adequately support a family.
What is NOT Required to Become a Foster Parent
Parents are not required to own a house. Renting and apartments are acceptable provided there is enough space for each of the children and the home meets safety standards. In addition, any of the following will not disqualify you:
Medical illness or disease will not disqualify you from being a foster parent just so long as the illness does not interfere with your ability to care for the child.
You do not need to be in a relationship.
Although it can be helpful, previous experience with parenting is not necessary.
