A Response to a Critical Need
Our Denton site opened in February 2024 to meet an urgent need. The Denton, Wise, and Cooke County region has had one of the lowest numbers of foster families in all of Texas. Sadly, this has resulted in children being placed far from home — sometimes even outside of the state.
Why Denton Matters
Placing children far away makes it difficult for caseworkers to manage their care and nearly impossible for children to remain close to schools, friends, and familiar faces. Kids First joined the State’s efforts by launching a local training and meeting center in Denton to help change this.
A Growing Community, A Growing Mission
Denton and surrounding counties are growing rapidly — and so is the need for local foster, adoptive, and kinship families. We’re here to walk alongside new families who are ready to meet that need.
Easy to Find, Easy to Access
Our Denton location is conveniently located just off I-35E and I-35W, near the University of North Texas. Whether you’re coming from Denton, Wise, or Cooke counties, it’s an easy drive and a supportive place to begin your journey as a caregiver.
Foster Parenting
By being a foster parent, you’ll be able to help children who have been abused or neglected. Kids First is licensed to verify foster homes for the State of Texas.
Kinship Care
Kinship services seek to place children first with qualified family or friends. We are here to walk you through the process.
Adoption
Kids First is a licensed contract provider with the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services (TDFPS). Kids First screens and verifies families for adoption.
FAQs
Do foster parents get paid in Denton, Texas?
1
Foster parents in Texas receive a monthly stipend from the State to help cover the cost of caring for a child. This is not personal income but a reimbursement for things like food, clothing, and daily needs. Check out this article that answers the question how much do foster parents get paid in Texas. Your Kids First coordinator will walk you through the details.
What is kinship care and does Kids First offer it in Denton?
2
Kinship care is when a relative or trusted family friend steps in to care for a child who can no longer safely remain with their parents. Kids First provides kinship care services in Denton, Wise, and Cooke County, walking caregivers through the same verification process as foster families to access training, support, and financial reimbursement.
Can I foster to adopt through Kids First in Denton?
3
Yes. Kids First recommends becoming licensed as a foster-to-adopt family, which expands your placement options. You start as a licensed foster parent, and if parental rights are terminated, you are first in line to adopt. Kids First supports foster-to-adopt families throughout Denton.
Can I rent or be single and still foster in Denton?
4
Yes to both. You do not need to own a home or be married to foster. Basic requirements are being at least 21, having a stable income, and reliable transportation.
